New Year, Same Me, Slightly More Organized

Posted on January 21, 2026January 20, 2026 by

Dear Journal,

Even though we’re only a few weeks into the year, I still appreciate this stretch of time because it naturally creates a pause to reflect on what’s working, what isn’t, and where I want to put more effort. You can make changes whenever you want, but January has a way of making reflection feel structured and actionable instead of theoretical.

Every year, I write New Year’s resolutions. I don’t usually hit all of them, but writing them down helps me identify specific areas where small adjustments could add up over time. Almost every year, I carry one or two habits forward that improve my routines, my health, or how I approach my work, and that alone makes the exercise worthwhile.

This year feels different in a very tangible way. I’m in a good place mentally and physically, and I have more capacity than I’ve had in the past, which means I can take on additional responsibility, learn new skills, and follow through more consistently. I’m better at managing my energy, prioritizing what matters, and staying focused, and that shows up in my work and in how I interact with my kids, my coworkers, and my friends.

I don’t know exactly where I’ll end up when it’s time to retire, but I do know I want to make good use of the time I have left in my career by continuing to learn, taking on meaningful challenges, and contributing in ways that feel useful and necessary. I want my work to feel connected to who I am, and I want to be able to look back knowing I kept growing instead of settling into repetition.

Work and life don’t have to be separated into competing buckets, because effort and growth in one often carry over to the other. When I’m learning and improving professionally, it sharpens how I think and act personally, and when things are solid at home, it gives me clarity and focus at work.

This year, I’m keeping things simple by being deliberate with how I spend my time, choosing opportunities carefully, and staying consistent with the habits that move things forward, trusting that reliable progress tends to come from follow-through rather than big declarations.

Sincerely,

Your Pal,

James
